Coping without a Dishwasher – a survival guide

Almost everyone owns a dishwasher nowadays but if you are one of the unfortunate ones who don’t, you have to make the best out of the kitchen sink.
Dish washing is made a lot easier by following the right order with the right tools. For
easy foolproof dish washing by hand:

Essential tools:

  • rubber gloves
  • sponge
  • washing up liquid
  • dirty sticky dishes
  • lemons
  • washing powder

Step 1: prepare your filthy dishes, glasses, mugs ect.
Begin by scraping off any excess food. Next stack the dishes in preparation for washing. Tough stuck on foods may need to be soaked. To remove tough tea or coffee stains from mugs, use half a teaspoon of washing powder, add hot water and leave to soak.

Step 2: run hot water, the hotter the better, in the sink with a squirt of washing-up liquid.

Step 3: start
with the cleanest things that need washing up, glasses or cups for instance.
Washing these items first keeps your water fresher. You always should rinse off
the dish washing suds and residue from the dishes

Step 4: next wash plates, bowls, and serving dishes. Check again for any items stuck on them.

Step 5: now may be a good time to change the water. Repeat steps 1 & 2.

Step 6: wash cooking dishes.
Always clean the bottoms of pans. Any oily residue left will burn onto the bottom of the pan at the next cooking session.

Step 7: once all your dishes are washed, it’s time to give the sink a good quick clean.
Wipe down the sink, dish drainer, and dishpan. Depending on how dirty your dishes were, you may want to fill up your sink with hot water, a tiny bit of washing up liquid and chuck in some lemon slices. Leave for a couple hours and let the lemon cut through any remaining grease and leave your sink smelling nice and fresh.
