Water: the elixir of life. It is essential to good health and a well functioning body. Lots of people say you should always drink plenty, but exactly how much water should you drink every day?
Unfortunately there’s no clear answer. It all depends on the individual, like how active you are, what you eat, where you live ect…
The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.
I sometimes find it quite hard to drink enough water and even have to force myself to drink more. This is just a recommended guideline, basically you should drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and produce between one and two liters of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day.
A few things to consider: if you exercise you lose body fluids, and therefore should drink more, also if you live in a hotter environment you will need more water. And very important to drink plenty when sick.
